The UAE Ministry of Finance has successfully implemented Robotic Process Automation (RPA) across its internal operations, completing the second phase of the programme. By using software robots, an automated application, the department achieved a high accuracy rate of over 98% while executing 1.8 million transactions. According to a report published by the Emirates News Agency (WAM), this automation saved 39,000 hours of manpower. It has also brought significant gains in productivity and efficiency, representing a major step forward in the shift to an economy focused on knowledge and innovation.

The public sector is increasingly using robots
The use of robots is increasingly common in the public sector as government organizations strive to increase efficiency and improve customer service. Ahead of 2020, the ministry identified various areas that could benefit from automation, such as accounts payable, payroll and pensions, financial accounting, IT processes, network services and hardware monitoring.
Impressive results from robot deployment
By 2022, the ministry had deployed more than 50 unattended robots and achieved impressive results. As a result, these robots completed 12,000 hours of work in 2023 alone. Currently, the department has automated 63 processes and sub-processes, resulting in a significant 95% reduction in errors and a 65% reduction in average processing time.
Cultivate a culture of excellence
RPA is just one facet of the Department’s efforts to modernize government operations and foster a culture of excellence. This culture in turn creates an environment conducive to innovation, aligned with the UAE’s vision outlined in Our UAE 2031 and the UAE Centenary Plan 2071.
Promote innovative practices
The process automation plan is aligned with the Treasury’s Strategic Plan 2023-2026, a roadmap for improving government performance through financial empowerment, resilience, innovation, financial leadership and sustainable development. The plan contains several pillars designed to promote innovative practices, including the adoption of RPA.
The ministry’s website offers a digital procurement platform that shortens the process from 60 days to just 6 minutes. The platform enables more small companies to participate in tendering for government contracts, thereby promoting greater competition.
The third phase of RPA implementation is expected to further increase the number of automated processes and sub-processes to over 100. The goal is to reduce average processing times by a further 10% and reduce errors by 98% across all robot processing processes.
