The United Arab Emirates’ largest oil producer is doubling its carbon capture target to meet net zero targets and hopes to boost its green credentials ahead of a major United Nations climate summit.
Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. plans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 10 million tons per year by 2030, up from a previous target of 5 million tons, a statement said. ADNOC’s Executive Committee, chaired by Crown Prince Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, approved the plan as part of the company’s strategy to achieve net-zero emissions from its own operations by 2045. part.

The UAE, the first Gulf country to announce a target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, will host major United Nations climate conferences starting in late November. As one of OPEC’s largest oil producers, the UAE plans to increase its oil production capacity by about 20% to 5 million barrels per day by 2027 and appointed Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) Chief Executive Sultan Al Jaber. Al Jaber was criticized for his role as COP28 chairman.
Even with more ambitious carbon capture targets, ADNOC will only be able to prevent a fraction of its emissions from entering the atmosphere. The company generates 24 million tons of carbon dioxide per year in its upstream operations, namely oil and gas production. ADNOC’s calculations also do not include emissions from customers burning the oil and gas it produces.
Adnoc announced a second carbon capture project in September that will prevent carbon dioxide from reaching the atmosphere at the Mount Hab gas processing facility and pump it into crude oil wells for use in enhanced oil recovery processes. Once completed, the project will bring ADNOC’s carbon capture capacity to 2.3 million tons per year.
The company also has a smaller project aimed at absorbing carbon emissions from steel plants and injecting natural gas into oil fields.
Adnoc is looking at other sources of carbon dioxide in the emirate that can be captured, reused or permanently stored, Musabbeh Al Kaabi, Adnoc’s head of low carbon solutions and international growth, said in an interview last month. Algeria’s national oil company will host its main annual oil conference, the Adipec Conference, this week, and this year’s conference is likely to focus on climate issues. Adnoc frequently announces contract awards for its ongoing projects at Adipec.
