Italian chef Cosimo Danese, 44, injured his knee while playing football and missed his favorite game for more than three years. In the near future, he will be able to return to playing football again, all thanks to the innovative procedure of Ligament Augmentation and Reconstruction Surgery (LARS).
“I suffered a severe knee injury in January 2020. To overcome the setback caused by the accident, I underwent traditional ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) surgery in February 2020, using the tendon as a graft. However, I could only Being able to walk and not be able to perform any physical tasks is daunting to me,” Cosimo said, adding that his health problems affected his work and personal life.
Unfortunately, the surgery was inadequate and he was unable to return to playing football. “Everyday chores like climbing stairs and standing for long periods of time, both of which are required in my job, became daunting obstacles for me,” Cosimo said.
“Severe pain and limited knee movement were very challenging for me. These difficulties were compounded by elevated cholesterol levels, adding complications to the diagnosis and treatment process,” Cosimo said.
After suffering for the past four years, Cosimo decided to undergo another surgery at Medcare Orthopedics and Spine Hospital in Dubai. To relieve chronic knee pain, he underwent LARS artificial ligament treatment, led by specialist orthopedic surgeon Dr. Massimo Piracci.

The surgery repaired damaged tissue within his knee, introducing an innovative approach to a complex orthopedic challenge. Instead of using an allograft, which is transplanting tissue from another person, Dr. Massimo opted for an artificial ligament. Artificial ligaments are synthetic structures designed to mimic the function of natural ligaments.

Doctors further stated that recovery from the LARS artificial ligament was superior to that of an allograft, with patients often regaining mobility extremely quickly, sometimes on the day of surgery or even six weeks later. Dr. Massimo added, “Because recovery time is quick, postoperative patients can transition from crutches to walking, running, climbing stairs and standing for long periods of time.”
Cosimo expressed his deep gratitude and looked forward to returning to competition. “My life has been incredibly transformed since undergoing this transformative surgery. Not only did this surgery take some weight off my body, it also opened the door to new possibilities and gave me a sense of confidence in my days. I am quite confident now that I can return to football after this treatment,” said Cosimo.
Among knee injuries, ACL injuries emerge as highly prevalent, making up about 40 per cent of all sports-related injuries. In the UAE, the incidence of these injuries is significantly five times higher than in other parts of the world, and is on the rise. Annually, over 200,000 ACL injuries are reported in the USA, with nearly half requiring knee reconstruction. A significant 70 per cent of these injuries occur while playing agility sports like basketball, soccer, skiing, and football.
