During the Sheikh Zayed Festival in Al Wasba, the award hosted nine different festivals at its pavilion, attracting active participation from local farmers and diverse audiences.
The ongoing Al Wathba Honey Festival, which started on January 26 and runs until February 8, brings together more than 60 beekeepers and professional companies, providing them with a platform to showcase their products and highlight the initiatives and initiatives of UAE beekeepers. The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Security Authority (ADAFS) is committed to sustaining beekeeping and honey production.
This includes the production of queens of the Emirati bee species as part of the program’s activities to develop and improve bee species in the country.
Emirati bee varieties stand out for their ability to withstand the country’s summer climatic conditions, produce high-quality honey, and tolerate infection by the Varroa mite parasite. As of the end of 2023, this breed has been bred for 8 generations, with a total of approximately 13,000 queen bees.
Approximately 11,000 queen bees are being distributed to beekeepers in the country to support the sustainability of their projects. Preparations are currently underway to breed the ninth generation of queen bees in 2024, when there will be 5,300 queen bees.
Emirati producers and beekeepers participating in the Al Wathba Honey Festival highlighted the uniqueness of the Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Award for Agricultural Excellence in organizing a dedicated honey festival in an interview with the Emirates News Agency (WAM) .
The awards are an ideal marketing platform for Emirati honey, which is renowned worldwide for its high quality and diverse range of products.
The Al Wathba Honey Festival aims to support beekeepers and local honey producers, promote skills development and provide the opportunity to explore the latest innovations and modern technologies in beekeeping and honey production.
It also focuses on marketing the products of Emirati beekeepers and educating the public about the benefits and unique properties of Emirati honey.
The festival includes workshops, seminars on bee-related topics and live performances related to beekeeping and honey production in the UAE, aiming to promote this important sector and encourage community members to work and invest in this field.
Beekeeping and honey production are integral to the development of permaculture and support the UAE’s food security system, in addition to its environmental importance in facilitating the pollination process associated with the reproduction of plants and trees.
The festival hosts six competitions for beekeepers and local honey producers to encourage competition and promote the high quality of UAE honey products.
These categories include Best Sidr Liquid Honey, Best Samal Liquid Honey, Best Crystallized Honey, Best Sidr Honeycomb and Best Wild Bee Sidr Honeycomb.
The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Committee (ADQCC), in collaboration with ADAFSA, is involved in the evaluation of the competition.
ADQCC will provide laboratory testing services for honey samples submitted by local producers to verify the quality of the honey and assist the jury in selecting high-quality honey.
Al Wathba Honey Festival stands out as a key event of the Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Awards for Agricultural Excellence, which consists of nine different festivals.
