L&T Construction wins major EPC contract for UAE’s largest renewable energy power plant

Larsen & Toubro’s (L&T) Transmission and Distribution business unit has been awarded a major engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to build a 1,800 MWac solar photovoltaic plant in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Designated as the sixth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the project is expected to play a key role in reducing carbon emissions by approximately 2.4 million tonnes per year. The 20 square kilometer scheme will be implemented in three phases and will include the construction of a photovoltaic power plant and associated evacuation and interconnection facilities, including two gas-insulated substations, high-voltage underground wiring and medium-voltage distribution lines.
KACST and ACWA Power partner to build clean energy and desalination center in Saudi Arabia

King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) and ACWA Power Company have signed an agreement to establish a collaborative “Clean Energy and Desalination Technology Development Center” in a move to advance clean energy and sustainable desalination A big step forward. The agreement, signed by Dr. Saeed Al-Shehri, Vice President of KACST, and Thomas Altmann of ACWA Power, envisions the center becoming a center for scientific research and technology development in key areas such as solar technology, energy storage and innovative materials for desalination membranes.

Israel Electricity Authority approves electricity tariff update to promote construction of solar facilities
The Israel Electricity Authority has approved changes to energy production and storage tariffs to facilitate the construction of 100-630 kilowatt solar facilities. The updated rate schedule will increase revenue by up to 33%, encouraging the development of larger facilities. For example, a 630-kilowatt facility will now receive about $0.09 per kilowatt-hour, up from $0.07 previously. UNHCR aims to reach 97% sustainable energy dependence in Jordanian Syrian refugee camps by 2024
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Jordan has announced that the Zaatari and Azraq refugee camps in Syria will be almost entirely dependent on sustainable energy by the end of 2024. Latest figures from the UN agency show that 97% of Syrian refugee camps will rely almost entirely on sustainable energy. The electricity needs of both camps are met through solar energy. Solar power plants in the camp meet 60% to 70% of electricity needs, with the remaining 30% coming from the national grid and relying on carbon power plants. The agreement allows for the transfer of green energy from a 46-megawatt solar power plant in southern Jordan to Zaatari and Azraq refugee camps. In addition, electricity generated by two solar power plants in the camp also contributed to the initiative, according to Al-Mamlaka TV.
Shikun & Binui Energy to develop 100-130 MW solar and 180-240 MWh energy storage projects in Israel
Israeli company Shikun & Binui Energy has been awarded contracts to build 100 MW to 130 MW of photovoltaic (PV) capacity and 180 MWh to 240 MWh of energy storage. The tender was awarded by Trans Israel, the entity responsible for regulating Israel’s roads. The project, worth NIS 450 million to ILS 550 million ($119.8 million), will be operated by Shikun & Binui for 25 years before ownership transfers to Trans Israel. The company plans to sell the energy generated on the open market and expects annual revenue of NIS 60 million to NIS 70 million. Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2025, with completion time ranging from six to 12 months. The facilities will be located near six interchanges and the company is exploring the possibility of developing up to four projects, pending regulatory approval.
